How to select high-performance magnetics for EV applicationsHow to select high-performance magnetics for EV applications

Advanced, high-performance magnetics are crucial components in the electromobility industry. Properly selected magnetics can help to improve efficiencies, provide lower losses and reduce operating temperatures to increase overall system and vehicle performance. Other magnetics are critical for managing EMC, gate drivers and general circuit management.

Rapid development based on platform designs utilizing high-performance magnetic materials and techniques will benefit the designer in the unique challenges required in the xEV applications. In addition, the breadth of magnetics products allows designers a “one-stop” approach which improves speed to market designs and better efficiency.

Join this session at the Charged Virtual Conference on EV Engineering this Fall, presented by TDK, will discuss the latest magnetic technologies for xEV applications, including, Onboard charging, DC/DC converters, Motor inverters, BMS systems and external chargers and how they can help increase overall system and vehicle performance.

A Breakthrough Pyro Safety Module for Safe eMobility and Energy Storage Markets

Littelfuse, Inc. and Hirtenberger Automotive Safety created a joint venture resulting in a new company, PYTIC (Pyro Technology for Intelligent Circuit Disconnection).

PYTIC is focused on the development and distribution of a new and innovative pyrotechnic-based separator—acting as a true galvanic cut-off device—for the eMobility market and other industrial electrical energy storage applications. As hybrid-electric vehicles and fully electric vehicles are seeing tremendous growth across passenger car and commercial vehicle applications, there continues to be strong demand for safe, reliable products within these markets.

PYTIC brings together the core competencies, development expertise and production know-how of both companies: HAS’s pyrotechnically driven circuit breakers and Littelfuse’s sensors, fuses and signal processing. Through this cooperation, PYTIC has succeeded in jointly developing a highly innovative product, the Pyro Safety Module (PSM). The PSM consists of individual components that are optimally aligned with each other, resulting in a fully integrated product with higher performance at lower system costs. In addition, it requires less installation space. The PSM’s most important advantage over other products in the market is its even faster detection of overcurrent events, and thus a significantly faster and safer disconnection of the battery from the rest of the vehicle (less than 1 millisecond). This means that vehicle fires and electric shocks to passengers and rescue forces can be avoided in the best possible way.
